I bought one, it is ok. I took the spring off as it cants the chuck/drill bit towards the shaft with the spring as there is a bit of slop in the sleeves that ride up and down the shafts. I removed the two hard plastic sleaves from the chuck carrier and replaced them with a piece of ultra slippery Teflon PTFE 1/16" thick sheet (McMaster Carr part# 8545K13) that I rolled into a cylinder. To cut the strip use the full height of the hard plastic insert to measure for the width of the strip and marked a line with a sharpie. Cut the strip off with sharp scissors. Then roll the end of the strip around one of the steel shafts(PTFE is soft) and mark the approximate length needed to make a complete cylinder, you will have to trim off tiny amounts of the length to get it to fit perfectly into the holes in the drill chuck carriage(it should be a tight fit), push the piece of PTFE all the way to the bottom, I needed to use the edge of a 3/8" dowel to to get the PTFE piece to bottom out. There is no need to reinstall the two screw they are not necessary as the Teflon fits it tight. All the slop is gone. Reassemble the drill guide and put a thin film of gun oil, 3 in 1 oil, synthetic motor oil, or the like on the steel shafts, it will be silky smooth and it will be an excellent tool. I would recommend mounting the drill guide onto a 8" or 10" square base for stability. This is a light duty, hobbyist tool, do not expect to be drilling large holes for pegging mortice and tenon joints in huge timbers.

Thank you very much for the video and explanation. I purchased about 5 years ago the 1318 but I haven't had the opportunity to use it with my Forstner bits, which I think are great bits to make holes of different sizes. I have the Fisch Wave Cutter Forstner bits but the shank won't fit. Is there a solution to make them work together?

How can I purchase the “Easy Half” tape?

Very helpful video... I am a relatively new woodworker and just got my jointer and planar set up. I ran into this exact problem and did not think to hold the tail end of the board as you did.. the result was a thinner version of the board with the same twist!! :) - I will definitely adopt your technique. Thanks for educating us new kids :)

Another way to measure the inner dimension is to use the width of the tape measure housing. The FastCap tape measures you used in this video will tell you the width of the housing on the body. Extend the tape measure such that the tape pushes on one side and the back of the housing is against the other, then add the tape length to the housing length to determine your inner dimensions.

The larger stock guides for tablesaws aren't recommended for smaller portable contractor saws. Would these be suitable? I have a small 10" Bosch saw and I'd like to make it a bit safer for cutting drawer sides.

Good tip about plunging into the centre and then cleaning out the 'hole' into which the inlay goes. I wish I saw this video earlier on today as I was practising making inlays with guide bushing set and 1/4" cutter.

When I ordered my 24” I didn’t know it had the 0 center on one side. I have used that feature several times since I’ve owned it. In fact I bought the 12” and the 24” T. I think for what you get the 24” T is the Best Buy.

I've been cutting black ash for pounding into splints for adirondack packs and other basketry. It's basically quarter sawn with heart centered. I've watched every video on the subject and picked up some good ideas. This was a great explanation on the subject. I recently learned the best grades of boards are on the outer parts ( of big logs). I had already heard that was the case for my application , ash splints , but is where the most stable boards are.

Great vid! Would you mind telling me what size pencil do you use in your shop for markings? Is it 0.5 or 0.7 or 0.9? Which size is most suitable for marking on processed wood surfaces like pine boards I would get from Home Depot or Lowes?

I live in an old northern calif black walnut orchard. So I bought a woodmill. So far I have milled 3 trees, approx 20" dia, 5',6', 9', long. In 3" thick slabs. I cut in relation to the crotch. They've dried for about 5 yrs and were milled 10 months ago and stickered in the garage. other walnut is covered outside, covered now thru the summer and going under a plastic carport soon. I see very little cupping in any of it. But soon I will cut a 10' tall and 20" Diameter walnut tree and if someone is reading this in Oct 2023 feel free to give some advice, should I 1/4 saw it, slab it like the others? AND I am cutting and slabbing (?) it the same day, in November when things are cool. (the leafs are dropping now) Opinions?
